Mario Medina
Success Story
Recently, 39-year-old Mario Medina from Laredo, Texas, experienced severe fluid retention, causing swelling from his stomach to his thigh. He sought medical help where it was discovered that he had fluid in his lungs and dangerously high CO2 levels. This led to him being immediately admitted to an intensive care unit at a local hospital. Unfortunately, his condition continued to worsen as his oxygen levels dropped, blood pressure fell, and his heart began to fail. Mario was given multiple IVs and put on full life support, including a ventilator to help him breathe, while doctors worked to stabilize him.
After initial treatment and stabilization, Mario was transferred to long-term acute care hospital for continued critical care. While there, he was weaned off the ventilator and able to breathe independently. He and his wife then chose Laredo Rehabilitation Hospital (LRH) for continued specialized rehabilitative care.
When Mario arrived at LRH, he was severely limited in his mobility and faced significant challenges. He worked with the hospital’s interdisciplinary healthcare team to create an individualized care plan to help him meet his goals and maximize his recovery. He began receiving intensive physical and occupational therapy to help him recover his function and independence.
Through Mario’s determination and the support of the rehabilitation team, Mario regained his strength and achieved what he once thought impossible, standing on his own and walking again. He credited the hospital team for his success, especially noting the vital roles Sonia and Herendira, physical therapy assistants, played in his recovery.
“His progress is a true testament to the power of rehabilitation and the resilience of the human spirit,” says Eric, certified occupational therapy assistant. “We’re honored to have been a part of his journey and celebrate the incredible progress he made. His success serves as inspiration to all, proving that with the right care and dedication, recovery is always within reach.”
Mario is now on the path to recovery, becoming stronger and healthier daily.
